8. Quadcruncher, Orange Grove (roll over photo to show overhead view) PDF Print E-mail

Known only to a few, this beauty of a firetrail is tucked away at the end of Hardinge Road in Orange Grove. After descending from the main gravel track down to a rocky creek crossing the ascent begins kindly with a moderate slope (pictured below) luring you into a false sense of security before absolutely punishing you with 400m of the toughest dirtiest ascent i've seen in Perth. If you can emerge out into the top clearing still running you're in good shape. Directly behind the central tree in the clearing begins the descent of the Quadcruncher Valley Run.

Quadcruncher

- Rack bike in Park carpark
- Run further along Hardinge road past Bickley Recreation Camp
- Continue straight from bitumen onto wide grey gravel firetrack
- 150m further on, look left to see the Quadcruncher winding up the hillside
- Go left down the hill to creek crossing which is the start of Quadcruncher
- Cross creek and head straight up the track to the summit

After plunging deep into the valley and back up the other sides gentle slope to the checkpoint you'll be glad to know, at least on this Painathlon, this is the furthest point you'll be away from civilisation and a warm Epsom-salt bath.  Turn round and you're faced with the short but extremely steep Valley ascent (pictured) back to the clearing and down to your awaiting bike for the run homewards to 9 and 10.

Looking back on Valley Run

- Straight ahead after summit down to the valley (middle of 3 tracks directly behind the central tree in clearing as you approach it)
- Follow track down and around to the left up the valley
- 200-300m further up, the track flattens out and takes a right hand turn
- 50m further the orienteering Marker & Punch will be locked near to thick-trunked tree on left hand side
