Painathlon 2010 - Update 7 PDF Print E-mail

Hi Pain-people!

My how time flies.  The 2010 Painathlon field continues to grow with several teams added this week.

9 days til close of entries / 18 sleeps til go time
If you're waiting to bite the bullet and enter, there's not so much time left to do it.  Entries close 5.30pm Fri July 23rd.
Likewise if you've registered but not paid, or vice versa, please get onto it soon.

Online Rego (www.painathlon.com/register)  is dead easy and you'll be done in two minutes.
Paypal by credit card/visa debit is the easiest but you can that and bank transfer details at www.painathlon.com/payment

Tomorrow, i'm getting a further bank transfer update from our treasurer so will confirm all those by email before the weekend.

Familiariser

After the last few cold but dry weekends the long Painathlon 5-10 practice run met some wet conditions post-downfalls. Two hardy souls braved the conditions and joined Michael Parrotte for the run, making good time and finishing just after midday.

This weekends familiarisers
1. Challenge 1-5 run through - Saturday 7am, City Beach carpark - Marek will again take any attenders on the course, starting north of the surf club.  Approx time 2-3hrs.  Ideally email us if attending but Marek will be there regardless.

3. Jacobs Ladder - Sunday 8.30-9.15am - Jono will be at the ladder for those wishing to prepare themselves for the final Painathlon challenge (for all categories).  Come on down and start the day with burnies!

2. Quadcruncher run-through - Sunday 2.30pm - Meet Bickley Brook Reservoir Carpark, Hardinge Road, Orange Grove - Jono will take a run through of Painathlon Challenge 8.  Approx time 40 minutes.  Email RSVP mandatory.  Session won't go ahead without takers.  If time an issue but ultra-keen can go earlier (8am) or a little later.

How to donate
If your contacts are wondering how to sponsor you for the Painathlon there are a few ways.
1) Painathlon Website - got to 'Donate' and you'll find a link to the Variety WA donation page (minimum $20 for online tax-receipt).
2) Fwd the direct Variety WA link https://www.varietywa.org.au/donate
3) Collect cash and hand in on August 1st (or even Competitor Briefing, Jul 26th if you're super-organised)
4) Cheque made out to Variety

Variety will provide tax receipts for your sponsors if you can provide their details.  A convenient way to keep track is by downloading the paper entry form which includes a sponsor table (under 'resources' and '2010 Entry form' - or direct via
http://www.painathlon.com/2010-entry-form) .

A few Do's and Don't of Painathlon

The following will help you (and us) stay out of trouble on the day

  • DO arrive by 6.30am latest for the 7am start - never a good beginning to a Painathlon running from the carpark onto the beach after the pack.
  • DO stay on the right side footpath for your 3 Mount St laps not the road - It doesn't look good when 40 people are holding up residents cars on the hill.
  • DO head direct for Jacobs Ladder if it's gone 4pm and you're still in the hills - We want everyone on the ladder before sunset not out on course.  The Painathlon challenge is to complete as much as you can between dawn and dusk.
  • DO contact a support car (phone number will be on back of racecard) and ideally a marshall if you're pulling out for any reason on the day
  • DO be self sufficient on the day - Save water refills and lunch refuelling stop bring what you need for nutrition / fluid

  • DON'T run red lights during the cycles, obey normal road rules - We're a rare event being allowed to operate under road rules for the cycle so don't abuse the privilege.  Immediate disqualification for anyone caught or witnessed.
  • DON'T sit on the road (literally) at 'The Truth' (no.6) recharge stop.  Sounds obvious but not to some tired souls last year.  We'll have the racks and tables set further back from the road to discourage this.

**Competitor Briefing / racetop-racecard handout**
If possible keep monday July 26th free to attend the competitor briefing and collect your racetop/racecard.

The pre-briefing is your annual chance to be

  • taken through the Painathlon challenge by challenge
  • get the heads up on any last minute information/changes
  • ask any questions of me and clear up any uncertainties

I aim to keep it brief and volunteers are also invited to get a handle on how the event works (have any of you tried explaining the concept of Painathlon to anyone?!).

As part of smoothing out the on day registration we aim to have all racecards and tops ready to hand out at the pre-briefing, so that come the morning of August 1st, you can rock up, get ticked off and go.

Naturally, not everyone will be able to make it there so the fallback will always remain to collect on August 1st at rego (just allow extra time)

  • Date - Monday July 26th
  • Time - 7-9pm
  • Location - Upstairs lecture theatre, Notre Dame Uni School of Medicine, 38 Henry St, Fremantle
  • Street parking available

Hope to see many of you there

Timing
One casualty this year has been the Sport Ident chip timing.  We're unable to rent the set from Orienteering WA this year as they're being used and we haven't managed to locate an alternative set as yet.
So, it will be back to the slightly less accurate marshall timing system for this year, unless something comes up quite shortly.
If any of you have Sport Ident timing system contacts I don't have, we're all ears!
