Painathlon 2010 - Post Pain 3 PDF Print E-mail

Hi Team Pain,

First of all, let me give some exciting rough figures for you regarding the Variety fundraising for this year

Total sponsorship collected at raceday rego - $3891.05
Total collected in Variety shake tins - $233.45
Total donated online (as at 10 days ago) - $4321.00

With some extra sponsorship money still to come in and all leftover entry fee's (minus event running costs/shirt printing) still to be added we are well over $10,000 at this point which is best ever in the 4 years of Painathlon.

Will be exciting to see what our final tally ends up being, and even more so who we get to help with the funds.

Huge thankyou to our sponsors/supporters

Alot of the essential components of the Painathlon are due to the generosity of our supporters and sponsors.  We'd like to single them out briefly for some due praise.

Sportsfever (Applecross, Cottosloe, Subiaco, Inglewood, City) - With Painathlon since it's inception we get all our Painathlon volunteer and fundraiser t-shirts from these guys aswell as generous prize donations for the performers on course and top fundraisers.  Do get in and support them with a visit to your local store.  Great friendly staff, personalised fitting and extensive range of shoes and sporting gear.

Physiotherapy Solutions - Damian Oldmeadow very generously gives his time and his clinic in West Perth for the famed Painathlon recovery party.  Don't hesitate to try him or one of his team for your physio needs.  They are the best in the business and can bring you back to speed after a Painathlon beatdown!

MSAND - The Medical Student Society of Notre Dame does a huge deal for Painathlon including covering public liability costs, hosting painathlon.com and the online entry/payments as well as a large proportion of the all important volunteers to run the event itself.  Not to mention organsing the venue for our pre-race briefing.

Steve Doyle / Sports Performance - All bike racks, finish chute frame and event signage are thanks to Steve.  Really lends the Painathlon a feeling of professionalism despite the volunteer nature of the event.

Pure Blonde - On board since 2009 and help us offset shirt printing costs, provide prizes and a great looking finish line.

Hawker Britton - John Whitelaw and his team have provided excellent support for the event since 2009.  True public relations experts and always willing to help.

Orienteering WA - For the use of their punches which form the major checkpoints of the course.

E3 Champion formula - New in 2010 and provided their product for the course aswell as some great prizes and showbag fillers.  If you liked the product, seek them out.

For Fitness - Again new for 2010, these guys made up all the showbags which you all got at the finish line.   Try them out for some online bargains!

Results and challenge splits

As many of you have already seen, i've put up all the challenge splits I have available from the marshall timing sheets.

Apologies but from certain challenges there were alot of missing times (arriving, leaving or both) on the recording sheets.   I will attempt to rectify all the question marks to actual approx times if at all possible.

To this end if you're one of the unlucky ones who got missed at a challenge, give me some info of who you arrived and left the challenge with (if you can remember) or any other useful details so I can insert you in the mix in approx the right place.  Most of the 1600 photos I have contain an accurate digital time signature so can see what time they were taken if that helps.  Better still, if you timed your own splits and can inform me, i'll verify it.

Should be able to get cycle leg splits up aswell eventually so bear with me.  Will let you all know when they're up.

Have fun browsing and send me any extra pics I don't have.  No No.8 Quadcruncher pics yet and only a few from the No.7 The Zig Zag

Random Painathlete spotting

Our 2010 Painathlon overall champion Josh Randall has been spotted in this months RAC 'Horizons' magazine on page 14 in a random city photo collage for an article on 'getting to work'.

Race-day reports

We've also spied a number of nice Painathlon reports on various blogs/chat topics around the web.  We love to put Painathletes experiences up for everyone to enjoy (with pics of yourself added in) so send them through, or give us permission to use what you've written already.

Painathlon leftover t-shirts

After all the fundraising shirts have gone out I have a few remaining Small (x2) and Extra small (x2) Painathlon 2010 t-shirts to sell off.  They are $30 each and will go to the first replies I get by email.

cheers again and Variety grant news to come in the near future.

This email there are overall results and one huge lot of pics uploaded for your viewing and downloading.

I want to congratulate you all on the fundraising effort this year.  It's looking like we'll easily break $10,000 which will fund at least 1-2 great Variety grants.  I will keep you all informed when any presentations get made so you know what your effort went towards.

Painathlon caps and shirts
You may have seen last years Painathletes wearing the excellent Brooks Painathlon / Pure Blonde caps this year (pictured below on Todd).  If you'd like a 2010 one, I have found 8 extra in the Painathlon storage which are currently being logoed up for 2010.  The cost is a very reasonable $30 and will be first come, first served.  Get in quick, they really are superb running caps.

Likewise after all fundraising shirts have been claimed, we'll sell the rest off, also at $30 each.  I will let you know what sizes are available in the next week or so.

Lost property - waterbottles, lunch pack, sunglasses and socks

I still have
  • 2 waterbottles left from the Truth swap station - Norm Blacks no 29. orange and a white Endura unmarked.
  • Pete Gills untouched lunch pack.
  • A pair of plain black imitation Arnette sunglasses was left in the tray aswell
  • and a pair of yellow thorlo ankle socks were left in my car (which was rack crew 3)

More than happy to arrange return of these, just let me know which ones are yours.

E3 Champion Formula - OFFER

Many of you will have sampled, and hopefully benefitted from, the E3 champion formula during the 2010 Painathlon (available at Challenge 1,4,5,6,10).
Anthony from E3 generously provided E3 for Painathlon along with samples for all the showbags and several 1kg packs for prizes.

In case you haven't seen the offer on the samples already let me just re-iterate it

If you buy a 1 Kg of E3 at $59.95 any Painathletes will receive a bonus 3x60g sachets plus an E3 waterbottle (valued at $30)

Please feel free to contact Anthony Durbridge on 0424 980 808 or anthony@e3champion.com.au with any enquiries.

This offer expires on 18/8/10 so be quick to take advantage and do support one of our supporters!

Race reports

If you feel like penning/typing your Painathlon 2010 memoirs down, I know many will be interested in reading them.  I always put any race-reports up on the special section on http://www.painathlon.com/reports along with pics (good only!) of the author.  I have a few promised already (Jake Hannah, Dave Kennedy), i'll do one for the half and Christo has already done his support vehicle story of the day.  Get involved and let us in on your Pain!

Just to give you the idea let me fill you in on my funniest and most tragic moment from Painathlon 2010.

Funniest - Marek, every year claims this is the last time he'll take part (he's completed 10/10 within the cut-off 4 years running!).  This year at the finish was no different but he sounded very sincere when he said "..no this is it.....this is really it for me.......You... win ....Michael Parotte.....You winnnnnnn" - note Michael Parrotte has also done every Painathlon so far but I had no idea that these two were locked in a Painathlon enduro battle for the ages.  We'll see you again next year Marek, Painathlon wouldn't be the same without you!!

Most tragic - Having magically made it past the halfway point of the Bridges run during the half without cramping (unusual for me) I just had the back 4.5km to do along riverside drive.  30m ahead of me, an elderly lady probably in her 60's (not a Painathlete) was shuffling along efficiently.  Feeling strong and fast, I slowly but surely reeled her in for the kill (read overtake) but the nearer I grew the faster she seemed to be going.  Despite an awkward skate with no heel lift she was moving like the clappers.  Foolishly I surged to try and pass her but no sooner had I drawn level and half a metre ahead of her, hammy cramp set in and I was sent reeling backwards into my rightful place trailing a granny.  How embarassing, she sure showed me who was boss.

more to come soon

cheers

Cramp you so much everyone!

You all helped make that a very memorable and the biggest Painathlon yet!  Even just having done the half, I am barely able to walk the wards at Fremantle let alone sit for any period of time and then stand.  My hammy's have gone on strike.  Spare a thought for the Solo Painathletes, you are all warriors!

This is just a brief email to announce the major winners in all categories.
Further updates will follow with more detail but this is to keep you going, while I put all the pieces together.

I already have over 1250 photos to get up on the site and will roll them out as soon as possible.  Will accept and post any other event photos you (or friends/partners) might have.

**First lot of 2010 event pics up at www.painathlon.com/galleries now!**

If you have an account of the day (or feel like writing one), email it here and i'll make sure it gets up on the site.  It's great to hear the story of peoples pain.

Painathlon 2010 - Update 9 PDF Print E-mail

Hello Painateers,

Close to 70 of you have braved the fear and embraced the Pain by entering this year.  We have 23 Solo Painathletes, 4 teams and 35 Half Painathletes (36 if I suit up!) which should make a great crowd.  I hope you all enjoy it as much as past years.

Monday Briefing
Great turnout for mondays briefing and we have most racetops and racecards handed out, which should save good time at registration on the day.  No worries if you couldn't make it, you can pick up your gear on the day.

Apologies I didn't have time to re-edit the entire powerpoint but time has been short lately.  Hope you had all your questions answered and feel it was worthwhile attending.

Handing in sponsorship money
If handing in sponsor cash on raceday please put it in a clear ziplock bag with a list of your sponsors (including those requiring tax receipts), total amount and your mailing address.  We will hand this on to Variety who will process and post out tax receipts.

Spare water bottles
For full and team Painathletes, you can each leave 2 filled water bottles in the crate at registration to exchange for your empties at the Truth refuelling stop.

Recovery Party
Whether half, team or full, all are welcome to the 5.30-8.30pm recovery party at Physio Solution, 3rd floor 31 Outram St, West Perth.  By sunday we will hopefully have a full complement of physios to help ease your pain and a warm meal to boot.  Your racecard is your ticket for treatment so don't hand it in when you cross the line, just get it checked and hang on to it.

Road rules
As emphasized in the briefing, please adhere to all road rules when on the bike, particularly in relation to red lights.  Save your energy for the sand, hills, loops and steps and keep us and yourself out of trouble.

GPS Painathlon route & Mapmyride link
Leah Glass has kindly provided a mapmyride route (link below) which may prove of interest to some of you
http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/australia/-perth/851127866772529496

Painathlon.com resources
If you haven't found it yet, the Resources section of the website has a good deal of information available to download and/or read.  The directions documents may be particularly useful to print out and have with you in case the need arises.
Also see the nutrition article by 2007 winner Brad Hosking.

Zig Zag shortcuts
On the last familiariser on sunday, 6 of us ran the Zig Zag and marked in yellow tape the easiest route to cut down to the bottom from the carpark.  After the initial section the next continues directly over the road.  Coming to the 2nd road crossing turn right and before the hairpin you should see another yellow-tape marked cut across.  Then it's a short jog along the road to the final shortcut on the right.  In the spirit of the event, please only use shortcuts on the way down.

Looking forward to seeing you all there on sunday.  Avoid rocking up at 6.45am as you may miss the start if the rego line is packed.

Online entry is easy at www.painathlon.com/register
Online payment is equally simple at www.painathlon.com/payment using either paypal (no signup required) or the transfer details provided.

Entry payments
We still have a few registered people to confirm payments for.  If you've been delaying then now is the time.
If you haven't received a payment confirmation email from painathlon@hotmail.com and you paid more than a few days ago, could you drop us an email to confirm when and how you paid.

Only registered and paid entrants will be able to collect their racetop and racecard at the briefing next monday evening (details below).

Reminder that on the day payment incurs a $20 late-fee so please get it done before then.  If attending the briefing you can pay in cash.

IMPORTANT - Competitor Briefing - *Change of Notre Dame Uni venue*
Apologies for the late notice but there has been a change of lecture theatre for the briefing 7-9pm on next monday July 26th.

It will now take place in ND 1/103 located at 23 Mouat St, Fremantle (parallel street to previous location in Henry St)
Attached to this email and hyperlinked just below is a jpeg map of downtown Fremantle indicating the location.

If possible please attend, if only to pick up your racetop and racecard and make things smoother for us and yourselves on August 1st.  I'll run through the event challenge by challenge, give any up to the minute course news and take any questions from the floor.  Volunteers are also encouraged to attend.

We can also accept any sponsorship or entry monies at this time.  Hope for a good turnout and to give out most of the tops and cards.

2010 Painathlon T-shirt
Huge thanks to Sportsfever who have yet again provided their shirts which we customise into the Painathlon $250+ fundraising reward and Pure Blonde Naked whose sponsorship helps toward the customisation costs.  This year features some fetching sleeve logo's.

If you won't raise $250 but still wish to have a shirt, we'll make whatever is left available for purchase (likely ~$30 all going to Variety) and get more made up if required.

Prizes
Although we emphasize that this event isn't about lucrative cash prizes we do reward good efforts in some way aside from immense kudos!

This includes:

  • Top fundraiser
  • Painathlon male and female champions
  • Half-Painathlon male and female champions
  • Fastest team
  • Service shield winner
  • Challenge winners - For the fastest marshall-timed split at any challenge - max one per entrant

Every reason to go your hardest!

Last chance familiarisers
Of course we will run a last weekend of familiarisers to prepare your body for the onslaught, (or half-onslaught!)

1) Challenges 1-5, Saturday 7am, City Beach carpark north of surf club
Marek will again take all-comers through the opening 5 Painathlon challenges, finishing with the 9.65km Bridges Run.  Excellent chance to practice your transition tactics (cleats or no cleats?) and atune the body to sand-cycle-uphill-downhill-uphill-downhill-cycle-uphill etc etc!   The half will be a breeze if you can handle this workout.

We had a great crew of almost 10 out last saturday and hope some of you will join in this time.  Pace is friendly
I'll fwd any rsvp email to Marek but you may rock up unannounced should you wish.

2) Guided drive - Challenge route 5-10 with runs on Zig-Zag, Quadcruncher (and possibly Painultimate & Jacobs)

  • Sunday 12.30pm, meet at the Vic Park Causeway

Michael Parrotte has the afternoon free to take up to 7 people in his minivan on a guided tour of the back half Painathlon route including familiariser runs of the Zig-Zag (including the much sought after downhill shortcuts!) and the rocky horror show of the Quadcruncher.
If there is enough interest, I can offer a further 4 spots in my car.
RSVP email essential.  If no interest will not go ahead.

I hope you have all been preparing in your own way for the day.  Always fun to find out if it's been enough.

Sponsorship
We challenge you all to get at least one sponsor for your big effort on August 1st.  You'll find out very soon that this is no triathlon walk in the park and very deserving of support from family / friends / colleagues.  Don't let your pain go to waste!

It all goes towards a Variety grant (hopefully grants plural!) which we'll share with you as soon as presented.

www.painathlon.com/donate will take you or your sponsors to a direct Variety WA donation link

Once again, don't forget to enter, join us on the weekend if you can, train hard and get used to that burn!
